Less well known is St Margaret's Cave. Walking down 80 steps underground you come to the place where Queen Margaret, later St Margaret prayed around 1070. All that survives of her shrine, erected for her canonisation in 1250, is the base. Up until the Reformation this made Dunfermline a major pilgrimage centre for Scotland.
